CHAPTER SIX

DANI SAT FACING the ocean, luxuriating in one of the biggest perks of working as a doctor in the Caribbean: the warmth of sand against the soles of her bare feet. The medical center’s cardiac wing boasted a courtyard that led straight out to the beach, and Dani loved taking her midmorning coffee there and relaxing by the water. She usually had a short break before she began her afternoon rounds, which gave her just enough time to decompress from her morning cases.

She’d never been able to relax like this back in Boston, but at Coral Bay, breaks were actively encouraged—and Dani was starting to enjoy them. Today, she’d removed her shoes and worked her feet into the dry, sun-warmed sand, reveling in the sensation of each grain slipping between her toes. The courtyard’s palm trees swayed gently above her. The aroma from her coffee wafted toward her nostrils, and she felt the lingering stress from work melt away as her feet absorbed the heat of the sand and the azure expanse of the ocean that stretched before her.

Even though Dani’s fellowship kept her busy, she’d never felt so relaxed in her life. Part of that was simply because life in the Caribbean was beginning to have a positive effect on her. The slower pace of island life, the beauty that surrounded her and the sense of community that came with living in such close proximity to her colleagues and patients were all affecting her in positive ways.

But the biggest change that impacted her was the arrangement between her and Cade. Six weeks had passed since they’d begun their experiment in being together without being emotionally involved. They’d spent more time in one another’s bedrooms, had clandestine meetings at work and exchanged meaningful glances when they were certain no one else was looking.

As far as she could tell, no one at work suspected a thing between the two of them. For once, she was able to enjoy a connection with someone else that was about what she wanted, rather than expectations or obligations. And Cade continued to surprise her every day. He was an excellent cook, and he proved to be very helpful in her ongoing search for living quarters because he knew so much about the island and its residents. For someone who claimed that he preferred to be alone, he certainly knew plenty of people. He was always introducing her to groups of island children and shopkeepers in town.

She felt a whirring in one pocket of her white coat and saw that Kim was inviting her for a video chat.

Dani hesitated. Internet connection on the island was so spotty that she hadn’t spoken to Kim for weeks. Not since they’d discussed having a calm, professional conversation with Cade about how the two of them weren’t going to kiss again. And now things had gone in a very different direction. What if Kim was disappointed in her?

But Kim had never judged her before. Dani decided that if the subject of Cade came up, she’d tell her friend all about it.
